MMB Capstone Project

The MMB Capstone simulates the early stages of creating a startup company. First, our team identified an unmet need and devised a product to fill that need. In our case, we found an enabling technology from NC State. From there, we created a full business model canvas to describe how the company would operate. This includes defining the value proposition, key partners, resources, and activities, along with customer relationships, channels, and segments. Additionally, we considered cost structure and revenue streams to complete the picture. Ultimately, we determined whether there was a strong enough business case for this company to be a go or a no go.

Our product, Temporary Terra, is a biodegradable plant pot made of a patented, sawdust-based material. Because of its material properties, it is sturdy above ground, but biodegrades quickly when placed in soil, solving many of the issues with existing biodegradable pots.

Ultimately, although we believe Temporary Terra has a strong value proposition, projected revenue from this product alone would not justify starting the company. However, it would make a good addition to the lineup of a larger company, making a licensing deal a possibility if we were to move forward.
