MMB Practicum Projects

Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies

From September to December 2021, I worked in a team of six student consultants for Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies. Our project sought to estimate the size of contract development and manufacturing organization markets which Fujifilm is a player in. These included mammalian cell culture, microbial fermentation, viral vector gene therapy, and drug product manufacturing. We gathered data about each market as a whole, then identified key players and found their revenue and key attributes that might correlate with revenue. From there, we determined if there were any accessible predictors of revenue using linear regression and estimated market sizes based on both top-down and bottom-up analyses. We presented our findings in a mid-project update and final presentation.

PHAXTEC

From February to April 2022, I worked in a team of five student consultants for PHAXTEC, a startup focused on development of the bioplastic PHA for use in coating applications. Our project sought to assess two possible markets for PHA-based coatings, fertilizers and EV batteries. We gathered data about the required properties of materials for these applications and what conditions they would need to withstand. Additionally, we gauged interest in PHA based on input from key opinion leader interviews. Market reports and go-to-market strategies were prepared for both possible applications of PHA. We provided our findings in a report and a presentation; the latter is available here.

Novozymes - Team Lead

From September to December 2022, I led a team of five student consultants for Novozymes, a world leader in enzyme and microbe development and production. Our goal was to identify and evaluate new markets and applications for Novozymes. We developed a strategy to determine technical feasibility, commercial viability, and customer need for ideas, then implemented that strategy for 10 new applications. At the project's conclusion, we made recommendations on which applications Novozymes should pursue and why. We summarized our findings in 10 reports and a presentation; the public version of the presentation is available here.

As a team lead, I also planned, organized, and ran weekly team meetings and biweekly meetings with Novozymes. I provided supervision and guidance to my 4 teammates.
